Geneva: India has abstained from voting on the resolution seeking probe into Sri Lanka’s war crimes at the UN Human Rights Council. India made its stand clear, citing the resolution would rather hinder efforts than contribute constructively.
The US led international probe has 47-member Council voting on the resolution tabled by the US, the UK and Northern Ireland , Montenegro, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Mauritius.
India decided to abstain during vote on the resolution, unlike the resolutions in 2009, 2012 and 2013, as this one imposes an international investigative mechanism.
India believes this is an intrusive approach that undermines national sovereignty, media reports said, adding “adopting an intrusive approach is counter-productiveâ€.
Several countries including Russia and China criticised the report compiled by UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay, during the interactive dialogue held at the UNHRC sessions in Geneva on Wednesday while countries including the US, UK and France commended the document.
