Excited crowds await their turn for Monorail in Mumbai

Mumbai: Excited Mumbaikars were seen queuing up outside the stations since on Sunday – as early as 4 am, three hours ahead of the scheduled 7 am when the first scheduled trip was to begin. Huge crowds forced authorities to pull down station shutter earlier than scheduled.

The country’s first monorail was inaugurated on Saturday by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan but is open to the public from Sunday.

The 8.93-km stretch of the monorail will run between Wadala and Chembur. To start with, it will run every 15 minutes between 7 am and 3 pm. At its fastest, it will run at 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph); the average speed is set at 65 kilometres per hour (40 mph).
