Day after Rahul’s resignation, Harish Rawat resigns as AICC general secretary

A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi revealed that he was no longer the party president, All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Assam Harish Rawat also tendered his resignation on Thursday while taking responsibility of party’s defeat in 2019 elections.

Rawat, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister, was appointed AICC general secretary in charge for the state of Assam last year in July.

Rawat also fought the 2019 general elections from Nainital–Udhamsingh Nagar Lok Sabha seat but lost to BJP’s Ajay Bhatt. While the Congress managed to win only three of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam.

In the recently held general elections for the 17th Lok Sabha, Congress party had a crushing defeat by the BJP and it managed to secure only 52 seats.
