On the sixth working day of the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad introduced the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019. He also tabled the Triple Talaq bill, while Railway Minister Piyush Goyal introduced the Special Economic Zones (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in Lok Sabha.

Both the Houses of Parliament took up the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address on Monday. President Ram Nath Kovind had addressed the joint sitting of both Houses on June 20.

On the other hand, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said in the Upper House that the present government can keep its ‘New India’ to itself and return the ‘Old India’ to the people of the country.

MPs raised the issue of growing drinking water crisis in different parts of the country and demanded immediate interventions such as inter-linking of rivers and rain water harvesting to recharge ground water table.

Here are some major updates:

  1.  Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had introduced the Triple Talaq bill in the Lok Sabha saying rights of Muslim women will be protected. He said the issue is not about religion, but about the protection of women.


2. He also tabled the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019. It will replace an ordinance issued in March this year and proposes stiff penalties for violation of norms. Piyush Goyal presents Special Economic Zones (Amendment) Bill, 2019.

3. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal introduced The Special Economic Zones (Amendment) Bill, 2019.

4. Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, “In Old India, there was no enmity, no anger, hate, lynchings. In this New India, man has become man’s enemy. Give us that India where Hindu Muslim Sikh Christian live peacefully and are ready to give their life for each other.”

 5. Azad also said, “Jharkhand has become a factory of lynching and violence.”


6. Congress Lok Sabha leader, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said: Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman should be awarded and his moustache should be made ‘national moustache.


5. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also courted controversy by comparing PM Modi with  ‘gandi naali’. However, he later apologised for his remark.

6. Rajya Sabha members raised the issue of the drinking water crisis in different parts of the country and demanded immediate interventions such as inter-linking of rivers and rainwater harvesting to recharge the groundwater table.

7. Trinamool MPs stage dharna outside Parliament, demands ballot instead of EVMs.

8. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP, TR Baalu has given notice in Lok Sabha over the water crisis in Tamil Nadu.

9. The timing of Lok Sabha has been extended till 8 pm and Rajya Sabha till 7.10 pm today because of Motion of Thanks on the President’s address.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar formally joined BJP today in presence of party Working President J.P. Nadda at Parliament House.

Apart from this, BSP chief Mayawati broke his ties with SP, saying that her party will no longer contest elections in alliance with Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party.

The ongoing session, which began on June 17, will continue till July 26. The first session of Lok Sabha will provide 30 sittings spread over 40 days in Lok Sabha and 27 sittings spread over 37 days sittings in the Rajya Sabha.

The Economic Survey will be presented on July 4 followed by the Union Budget for 2019-20 on July 5.
