Indian teen makes the world’s lightest satellite, NASA to launch

An 18-year-old boy named Rifath Shaarook has made a 64 grams device which won the youth design competition.

Rifath says, the main objective to make this device is to show the performance of 3-D printed carbon-fibers.

NASA have confirmed to test the miniature satellite and it will be sent on a 4-hour flight for the suborbital mission.  The satellite will be operational for about 12 minutes in a microgravity environment.

The satellite has been named as KalamSat and in the honor of the late Indian President and Scientist, APJ Abdul Kalam.

Rifath said, “It will have a new kind of onboard computer and eight indigenous built-in sensors to measure acceleration, rotation and the magnetosphere of the earth”.

“We completely built the satellite from scratch” he added.

Rifath hails from the small village of Tamil Nadu and his project was selected Cubes in Space, a challenge conducted by ‘Idoodle’ in collaboration with NASA.
